The Specifications That Actually Matter

Colour temperature (Kelvin / K)
Kelvin describes the colour of the light, not its strength. Lower numbers are warmer (yellow/orange), higher numbers are cooler (blue/white).

Use a timer — this is non-negotiable

Relying on memory produces an erratic photoperiod: stressed fish, unbalanced tank, sporadic algae. The timer is cheap and eliminates the problem entirely. There is no good reason to go without one.
Ignoring electrical safety
Forgetting the drip loop, plugging into a non-GFCI outlet, or resting a power strip on the floor. These shortcuts work fine — until the day water finds the cord. Drip loop on every cable, GFCI protection, connections kept high and dry. Build the habit from day one.
Judging a light by watts
Applying the old “watts per gallon” rule to modern LEDs. LEDs produce vastly more light per watt than the fluorescents that rule was written for, so the numbers no longer mean what they once did. Think in terms of the plants’ needs and the tank’s depth, not wattage.
