Best for: experienced hobbyists with specific goals.

Heater Controllers (External Thermostats)

A controller is a separate plug-in thermostat that you set your heater into, giving you a redundant, more precise temperature cutoff. It’s an excellent safety upgrade — but it’s an add-on, not your first purchase. Worth knowing it exists for later.

The Core Question: How Many Watts?

This is the heart of the article. Heaters are rated in watts, which measures how much heating power they deliver. Why “Per Litre” Isn’t the Whole Story

Account for the Actual Water Volume

A tank labeled “20 gallons” never holds 20 gallons of water. Gravel, rocks, decorations, and the gap below the rim mean the real water volume is often 10–15% less than the printed size. This is fine — it gives you a small built-in safety margin — but don’t oversize your heater “to be safe” based on the label. Bigger is not better here.

The Case for Two Smaller Heaters

For tanks larger than about 150 litres (40 gallons), many experienced aquarists deliberately use two smaller heaters that add up to the target wattage, rather than one large one. For example, instead of one 300 W heater, they run two 150 W units at opposite ends.

Mistake 4: Placing the Heater in a Dead Spot

A heater hidden in still water heats a pocket, switches off early, and leaves the rest of the tank cold and uneven. Always place the heater in moving water near your filter flow.
