These are exactly the chemicals that make tap water safe for you — and exactly the chemicals that make it dangerous for fish.

Chlorine and Chloramine: The Invisible Threat

Chlorine and chloramine are toxic to fish and to the beneficial bacteria your aquarium depends on. You must always neutralize them before fish or filter bacteria are exposed to the water.

Fish absorb water continuously across their delicate gill membranes. Chlorine damages gill tissue directly, causing burns, breathing difficulty, and in high enough concentrations, rapid death. Even at the low levels found in drinking water, chlorine is enough to harm fish over time and to wipe out the colonies of beneficial bacteria that process fish waste.

There is an important difference between the two disinfectants:

  • pH-affecting compounds. Your tap water has its own pH, often somewhere between 7.0 and 8.0, influenced by the minerals in it.

  • Do not plug in any electrical equipment — heater, filter, or pump — until it is properly submerged and you have finished filling. Heaters can crack or overheat in air; filters can burn out their motors if run dry.
  • Position your heater horizontally or at an angle near water flow if your model recommends it, but keep it unplugged for now.
  • If you have a hang-on-back (HOB) filter, it will need its reservoir primed (filled with water) before it can pump. Do this after the tank is full.

  • Using a bucket that held cleaning products. Soap and bleach residue are invisible and can kill every living thing in the tank. Dedicate aquarium-only equipment.
  • Ignoring temperature. Cold water stresses fish and stresses glass equipment. Match temperature on every fill, not just the first.
  • Forgetting the drip loop. Water travels along cords toward outlets. Always loop the cord below the socket so water drips off harmlessly.
  • Filling to the very brim. Leaving no gap causes overflow when you add hardscape, your hands, or fish, and starves the surface of the agitation that helps oxygenate the water.
  • Adding fish immediately after filling. A conditioned tank is chlorine-safe but not cycled. Adding fish to an uncycled tank exposes them to toxic ammonia. Cycle first.
