  • Clean media in old tank water, not the sink. When you do a water change, pour some of the removed tank water into a bucket and gently swish or squeeze your biological sponges in that. This rinses debris without killing bacteria. NEVER wash biological media in tap water — chlorine and chloramine in tap water kill beneficial bacteria on contact.

  • Keep a spare impeller and a small bottle of dechlorinator on hand. Impellers are the part most likely to fail, and they are cheap. Dechlorinator neutralizes the chlorine in tap water and should be used for every water change.

  • Listen to your filter. A healthy HOB hums quietly. A rattle usually means the impeller well needs cleaning or the impeller is worn. A gurgle usually means low water or trapped air. Your ears are an excellent diagnostic tool.

  • Reduce the waterfall splash if it is loud. A noisy filter often just needs the tank water level raised so the return flows into water rather than dropping onto an air gap.

Common Mistakes

Throwing away the cartridge every month. This is the single most damaging mistake new aquarists make, and filter packaging actively encourages it by selling monthly replacement cartridges. The cartridge holds your entire biological filter. When you toss it and drop in a pristine new one, you throw away weeks of bacterial colonization and effectively restart your nitrogen cycle, triggering a fresh ammonia spike that can kill fish.
