If you have been keeping a reef tank for any length of time, you have likely noticed that mushroom corals possess a near-magical ability to multiply. You buy a single polyp on a piece of rock, and a few months later, you have a small colony. Fast forward a year, and they might be carpeting a significant portion of your aquascape.

The secret to their success lies in their biology. Mushroom corals are survivalists. They have evolved in the ocean’s dynamic and sometimes harsh environments to withstand physical damage, changing water parameters, and varying light conditions. More importantly, they have evolved multiple mechanisms to reproduce vegetatively (asexually). In many cases, mushroom coral propagation is something they basically do themselves, requiring absolutely no intervention from the aquarist.

However, understanding how they reproduce naturally opens the door to manual propagation. Whether your goal is to control a rapidly expanding colony that is encroaching on your prized stony corals, to share beautiful specimens with fellow local reefers, or to trade in your propagated corals at the local fish store for store credit, learning to manually frag mushroom corals is an essential, rewarding skill. This comprehensive guide will cover everything a beginner needs to know about mushroom coral biology, their natural reproduction methods, the equipment required for manual fragging, step-by-step cutting techniques, the notoriously tricky reattachment process, and how to avoid the most common pitfalls.

Understanding Mushroom Corals

Before we can effectively propagate a coral, we must understand what it is we are cutting. Despite their common name, mushroom corals are not true stony corals (Scleractinia), nor are they true sea anemones (Actiniaria). They belong to the order Corallimorpharia. They are essentially a transitional organism—anemones that lack the sticky, stinging tentacles used for capturing large prey, but possessing the zooxanthellae (symbiotic algae) and internal structures similar to stony corals, just without the hard calcium carbonate skeleton.

Anatomy of a Corallimorph

To successfully propagate them, you need to be familiar with their basic anatomy:

  • Oral Disc: The top surface of the mushroom, which catches light and absorbs dissolved nutrients.
  • Mouth: Located in the center of the oral disc, used for ingesting food and expelling waste.
  • Pedal Disc (Foot): The base of the mushroom that firmly attaches to the rockwork or substrate.
  • Mesenterial Filaments: Internal structures that aid in digestion and can be expelled as a defense mechanism when the coral is stressed or damaged.

Common Types of Mushroom Corals

Not all mushroom corals react to propagation the same way. As a beginner, it is crucial to identify what you have:

  • Discosoma: These are the standard, smooth, or slightly bumpy mushrooms. They come in almost every color of the rainbow (red, blue, green, purple). They are nearly indestructible, incredibly prolific, and the absolute best candidate for your first manual propagation attempt.
  • Rhodactis: Known as “hairy mushrooms” because their oral discs are covered in varying degrees of tentacles or papillae. They grow larger than Discosoma and are slightly more aggressive. They respond exceptionally well to cutting.
  • Ricordea: Characterized by their beautiful, bubble-like vesicles covering their surface. There are two main types in the hobby: Ricordea florida (from the Caribbean) and Ricordea yuma (from the Indo-Pacific). Ricordea florida is robust and easy to frag. CRITICAL WARNING: Ricordea yuma is notoriously sensitive to manual cutting and is highly prone to “melting” (rapid tissue necrosis) when stressed. Beginners should avoid cutting R. yuma until they have significant experience.

Natural Propagation: How They Do It Themselves

If the thought of taking a razor blade to your beloved coral makes you nervous, fear not. You can simply rely on the coral’s natural reproductive strategies. Mushroom corals primarily reproduce asexually in the home aquarium through a few fascinating mechanisms.

Pedal Laceration

This is the most common form of natural propagation. As the mushroom coral slowly moves across the rockwork—seeking better light, flow, or just expanding its territory—it leaves tiny fragments of its pedal disc (foot) behind. These microscopic bits of tissue remain firmly attached to the rock. Over the course of a few weeks, these seemingly insignificant blobs of tissue will develop a mouth, begin to form a circular oral disc, and grow into a complete, genetically identical clone of the mother polyp. If you look closely at the base of a large mushroom colony, you will almost always see tiny “baby” mushrooms forming via pedal laceration.

Longitudinal Fission (Splitting)

Sometimes, rather than leaving pieces behind, a single mushroom will simply divide itself in two. The process begins with the mouth stretching and elongating until it pinches off into two distinct mouths. Following this, the oral and pedal discs will slowly tear down the middle, creating two separate, fully functioning polyps. This process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Budding

Less common than pedal laceration or fission, budding occurs when a small new polyp begins to grow directly out of the side or base of the mother polyp. Eventually, the bud grows large enough to detach its foot from the mother and establish itself on the adjacent rockwork.

The “Lazy Reef” Propagation Method

You can harness these natural behaviors to propagate your corals without ever using a blade. If you place a small pile of coarse aragonite rubble or empty snail shells directly next to the base of your mushroom coral, it will eventually creep onto the rubble. As it moves, it will leave pedal laceration fragments on the rubble, or it may split. Once a new polyp is firmly established on a piece of rubble, you simply remove that piece of rubble from the tank. Congratulations, you have a new frag ready to trade or relocate, with zero stress placed on the coral!

Preparing for Manual Propagation

While natural propagation is safe and stress-free, it is incredibly slow. When you want to multiply a specific designer mushroom quickly, or if a mushroom has detached and is floating aimlessly around your tank (where it risks being sucked into a powerhead), manual propagation is the answer.

Equipment Checklist

Before you remove the coral from the tank, you must have all your equipment prepared. Mushroom corals out of water secrete copious amounts of slime to protect themselves from drying out. The faster you can work, the better.

  1. Cutting Surface: A clean plastic cutting board or a small plastic Tupperware lid. Avoid wood, as it can harbor bacteria and absorb the coral’s mucus.
  2. Cutting Tool: A brand new, sterile scalpel (size 11 blade is ideal) or a fresh razor blade. Do not use scissors. Scissors crush the delicate cellular walls before cutting them, leading to massive tissue damage and a higher risk of bacterial infection. A sharp blade cleanly slices the tissue.
  3. Containers: Three small plastic containers (like clean food prep containers). One for tank water to hold the mother colony, one for an iodine-based coral dip, and one “Rubble Box” for reattachment.
  4. Paper Towels: For wiping down tools and absorbing excess slime.
  5. Rubble/Substrate: Small pieces of reef rock, crushed coral, or ceramic frag plugs.
  6. Protective Gear: Gloves and eye protection.

Safety Precautions

CRITICAL WARNING: Always wear nitrile gloves and protective eyewear when fragging any coral. While mushroom corals do not contain the deadly palytoxin famous in Zoanthids and Palythoa, they do secrete defense chemicals and heavy mucus. If this slime gets into a cut on your hand or you accidentally rub your eye, it can cause severe irritation, swelling, or bacterial infections. Furthermore, aquarium water harbors naturally occurring bacteria like Mycobacterium marinum, which can cause painful skin infections in humans. Always protect yourself.

CRITICAL WARNING: NEVER wash biological media, live rock, or coral frags in tap water. Tap water contains chlorine and chloramine, which instantly kill beneficial bacteria and severely burn the delicate tissue of corals. Always use tank water for dipping and rinsing during the fragging process.

Manual Propagation Techniques

Once your station is set up, extract the rock holding the mushroom coral from your display tank. If the mushroom is attached to a massive foundation rock that cannot be removed, you will need to gently massage the base of the mushroom with your thumb, slowly peeling the foot off the rock underwater until it detaches. This takes patience; do not rip it, or it will tear.

Place the coral on your cutting board. Here are the three primary methods for cutting mushroom corals.

Method 1: The “Snip and Drop” (Decapitation)

This method is the easiest and relies heavily on the coral’s regenerative properties. It is ideal when the coral is attached to a rock you cannot or do not want to remove from the tank.

  1. The Cut: Using your scalpel or a pair of surgical bone cutters (if reaching into the tank), cut the mushroom completely across its stalk, as close to the rock (the foot) as possible. You are essentially decapitating the coral.
  2. The Base: Leave the rock with the foot exactly where it is in the aquarium. Within 2 to 4 weeks, that seemingly dead stump of a foot will miraculously grow a new mouth, tentacles, and an entirely new oral disc.
  3. The Cap: You are now left with the top cap of the mushroom (the oral disc and mouth) in your hands. This cap needs to be reattached to a new piece of rubble, which we will cover in the reattachment section.

Method 2: The “Pizza Slice” (Vertical Sectioning)

This is the most common method for multiplying a single detached mushroom into several new corals. It yields the highest number of frags from a single specimen.

  1. Placement: Place the detached mushroom flat on your cutting board, oral disc facing up. Wait a minute for it to expel some water and flatten out.
  2. The First Cut: Take your razor blade and press down firmly and smoothly directly through the center of the mouth, slicing the mushroom cleanly in half. Do not saw back and forth; press down in a single guillotine motion.
  3. Further Slicing: If the mushroom is large (over 2 inches in diameter), you can slice those halves into quarters, again ensuring you cut through the center point where the mouth used to be.
  4. The Golden Rule: While mushrooms can regenerate from a piece of tissue that does not contain a portion of the mouth, their survival rate and healing speed increase exponentially if every frag contains a small sliver of the original mouth. Imagine cutting a pizza—every slice must meet at the center.

Method 3: The Blender Method (Advanced/Extreme)

While not highly recommended for absolute beginners due to the mess and varying survival rates, it highlights the resilience of Corallimorphs. Some advanced reefers will literally put a common Discosoma mushroom in a food processor with tank water, pulse it once or twice, and pour the resulting “mushroom soup” into a container of rubble in the tank. Surprisingly, dozens of the tiny cellular clusters will settle on the rubble, regenerate, and form tiny baby mushrooms. For beginners, stick to the Pizza Slice method for reliable, clean results.

The Art of Reattachment: The Hardest Part

Cutting a mushroom is incredibly easy; getting the resulting angry, slimy pieces to attach to a new frag plug is the hardest part of the entire process.

Unlike stony corals or leather corals, which can simply be dried off slightly and glued down with cyanoacrylate (super glue gel), mushroom corals defend themselves by producing thick mucopolysaccharide slime. If you put super glue on a freshly cut mushroom, the coral will instantly secrete a layer of slime between its tissue and the glue. Within an hour, it will simply slide out of the glue and float away into your tank.

You must force the mushroom to attach itself naturally. Here are the best methods to achieve this.

This is the most successful and lowest-stress method for attaching fresh mushroom cuttings.

  1. The Box: Take a small, shallow plastic Tupperware container. Drill or melt several small holes in the sides and bottom to allow for water flow, but make sure the holes are smaller than your frags.
  2. The Substrate: Fill the bottom of the container with an inch of coarse crushed coral, small pieces of live rock rubble, or ceramic frag plugs.
  3. Placement: Drop your freshly cut mushroom pieces into the box, allowing them to rest gently on top of the rubble.
  4. The Cover: Cover the top of the Tupperware container with a piece of bridal veil netting, tulle, or a coarse mesh bag. Secure it tightly around the rim with a rubber band. This prevents the frags from floating out and keeps curious fish and snails from getting in.
  5. Tank Location: Place this box in a low-flow, low-light area of your sandbed. The low flow prevents the frags from blowing around inside the box, allowing their pedal discs to settle against a piece of rubble.
  6. The Waiting Game: Leave the box completely undisturbed for 10 to 14 days. Do not poke, prod, or check on them daily. After two weeks, carefully remove the mesh. The frags should have naturally attached their feet to the pieces of rubble. You can now take that piece of rubble and glue that to a frag plug or your main rockwork.

The Mesh Wrap Method

If you want to attach a mushroom directly to a specific rock or frag plug, you can place the coral tissue on the plug and wrap a piece of bridal veil netting tightly over the coral and around the plug, securing the net with a rubber band at the base of the plug. The net holds the coral against the plug until it attaches naturally (usually 1-2 weeks). The downside is that if the net is wrapped too tightly, it can slice through the healing mushroom tissue, or the mushroom might grow through the mesh, making removal difficult.

What NOT to do: The Rubber Band and Toothpick Methods

You will read older guides suggesting you pierce the mushroom with a toothpick and rubber-band the toothpick to a rock, or simply rubber-band the mushroom directly to a rock. Avoid these methods. Freshly cut mushrooms are mostly water and delicate cellular tissue. A rubber band will almost always slice clean through the healing tissue, leaving you with two unattached pieces instead of one. Piercing them with a toothpick introduces massive trauma to the center of the coral and dramatically increases the risk of bacterial infection and melting. Stick to the Rubble Box.

Providing Optimal Healing Conditions

Once your mushrooms are cut and in their reattachment box, their environment dictates their survival rate. A newly fragged coral is essentially an open wound in a soup of bacteria.

Light and Flow

  • Lighting: Freshly cut mushrooms should be placed in low light (50-75 PAR). Their zooxanthellae are stressed, and intense light can cause photoinhibition and bleaching. The bottom of the tank or shaded under a rock overhang is perfect.
  • Flow: They require very low, indirect flow. Just enough water movement to bring fresh oxygen and carry away their heavy slime coat, but not enough to tumble them around inside the rubble box. If they constantly roll around, they will never attach a foot.

Water Chemistry

Mushroom corals are generally forgiving, but stable parameters are crucial for rapid cell regeneration and healing. Maintain standard reef parameters:

  • Salinity: 1.024 - 1.026 SG
  • Temperature: 77°F - 80°F (25°C - 26.5°C)
  • Alkalinity: 8.0 - 10.0 dKH
  • Calcium: 400 - 450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250 - 1350 ppm

CRITICAL WARNING: NEVER let your Nitrates and Phosphates drop to absolute zero. Corallimorphs thrive in slightly more nutrient-rich water than SPS corals. They rely on dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus to fuel their zooxanthellae and drive tissue regeneration. Aim for Nitrates between 5-20 ppm and Phosphates between 0.03-0.1 ppm. In an ultra-low nutrient system (ULNS), freshly cut mushrooms will often shrink, pale out, and dissolve away because they lack the basic building blocks required to heal.

Dipping for Success

After cutting, but before placing the frags in the rubble box, it is highly beneficial to dip the open wounds. Mix a small container of tank water with a commercial iodine-based coral dip (like Seachem Reef Dip or Lugol’s solution) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Soak the fresh frags for 5 to 10 minutes. Iodine is an excellent antiseptic that specifically targets bacterial and fungal infections on open coral tissue while promoting healing.

Troubleshooting and Common Mistakes

Even with perfect technique, things can sometimes go wrong. Recognizing the signs of failure early can help you save the rest of your batch.

Brown Jelly Disease (BJD)

This is the most common killer of fresh soft coral frags. It presents as a literal mass of brown, foul-smelling slime consuming the coral tissue. It is caused by a rapid infestation of ciliate protozoans that feed on damaged tissue. BJD is highly contagious and will spread rapidly to other frags in the rubble box. The Fix: If you see a frag turning into brown jelly, immediately remove the container from the tank. Carefully extract the infected frag and throw it in the trash. Do not try to save it. Perform an aggressive iodine dip on the remaining healthy-looking frags, rinse them in clean tank water, and place them in a new, clean rubble box.

Melting

If a mushroom frag simply turns into a translucent, disintegrating pile of mush without the brown jelly, it is “melting.” This is usually caused by cellular trauma from using a dull blade (which crushed rather than cut the tissue), poor water quality, or, very frequently, attempting to frag Ricordea yuma. There is no cure for a melting frag; remove it to prevent it from fouling the water in the reattachment box.

The “Floating Away” Frag

It is inevitable that eventually, a frag will escape the rubble box or slip out of its mesh netting before it attaches. If you see a tiny mushroom piece floating around your tank, turn off your flow pumps immediately. Use a turkey baster to gently suck the frag up, and place it back into a secure rubble box. If left to blow around, it will likely be sucked into a pump impeller, land in the overflow box, or settle directly on top of an expensive Acropora, where it will wage chemical warfare and damage the stony coral.

Over-Cutting

A common beginner mistake is getting too enthusiastic and slicing a single quarter-sized mushroom into eight tiny, microscopic slivers. While technically possible for an expert to grow out, tiny frags lack the energy reserves and surface area for zooxanthellae to sustain themselves through the healing process. Start by cutting your mushrooms strictly in half. Once you have a 100% success rate with halves, you can graduate to quarters.
