How to Propagate Rhizome Plants

Rosette plants do not have a tall vertical stem like a stem plant, nor a creeping rhizome like an epiphyte. Amazon Swords: Swords propagate quite dramatically by sending out an adventitious shoot—a thick, rigid stalk that grows rapidly upward, sometimes breaching the water’s surface.

  1. Instead of flowers (though they will flower if grown emersed), this stalk will develop nodes underwater.
  2. At each node, a complete miniature Amazon Sword will begin to grow, complete with leaves and small white roots.

  1. Unlike broadleaf rosette plants, it is generally acceptable to give Vallisneria a “haircut.”
